N3 acts as a bridge between the basic levels (N4, N5) and the advanced levels (N1, N2). At this level, you can understand Japanese used in everyday situations to a certain degree, read and comprehend written materials with specific contents on everyday topics, and follow conversations at a slightly slower pace.

JLPT N3 common questions
What is the JLPT N3 passing score?
You need at least 95 out of 180 overall and at least 19 out of 60 in each of Language Knowledge, Reading, and Listening. Falling below 19 in any one scoring section means you do not pass, even if your total exceeds 95.
How long is the JLPT N3 exam?
The current listed times total about 140 minutes: 30 minutes for Vocabulary, 70 minutes for Grammar and Reading, and 40 minutes for Listening. Listening time can vary slightly with the recording.
Why is N3 considered a bridge level?
N3 sits between the basic N4 and N5 levels and the advanced N1 and N2 levels. It introduces longer reading, broader vocabulary and grammar, and listening that is closer to natural speed while still focusing heavily on everyday situations.
Can a high vocabulary score make up for weak N3 reading?
Not completely. Language Knowledge and Reading are separate 0–60 scoring sections at N3, and each requires at least 19 points. Prepare and practice them separately even though Vocabulary, Grammar, and Reading appear in two timed test sections.
