Five-point self-check

Are you ready for JLPT N1 practice?

  1. 1I can read editorials, essays, and explanatory texts while tracking abstract claims and subtle shifts in viewpoint.
  2. 2I can distinguish advanced words and grammar patterns by nuance, register, collocation, and context.
  3. 3I can compare multiple texts and explain where their arguments, assumptions, or conclusions differ.
  4. 4I can maintain reading pace across a long section without sacrificing accuracy on information-retrieval tasks.
  5. 5I can follow natural-speed lectures and discussions while retaining structure, speaker intent, and key details.

4–5 checks: try a timed section now. 2–3: use the 90-day plan. 0–1: build foundations with the six-month plan. This is a study diagnostic, not an official score prediction.

Pick a realistic schedule

JLPT N1 preparation plans

30 days

Best for: Advanced learners already operating comfortably in Japanese

  1. 1.Take both timed sections immediately and classify errors by item type, cause, and scoring section.
  2. 2.Concentrate on the lowest scoring section while reviewing advanced vocabulary and grammar in context every day.
  3. 3.Rehearse 110-minute pacing, natural-speed listening, and full error review rather than chasing large new lists.

90 days

Best for: Strong N2 learners who need N1 precision, breadth, and endurance

  1. 1.Use month one to diagnose vocabulary and grammar nuance gaps and begin daily advanced reading.
  2. 2.Use month two for long and comparative texts plus natural-speed lectures, discussions, and reports.
  3. 3.Use month three for timed sections, pacing experiments, mistake patterns, and all three sectional minimums.

6 months

Best for: N2-level learners building sustained advanced comprehension

  1. 1.Expand language knowledge through varied authentic reading rather than isolated memorization alone.
  2. 2.Develop a consistent routine for long-form reading and active listening that includes summaries and viewpoint analysis.
  3. 3.Add item-type drills by month four and use the final eight weeks for timed cycles, review, and targeted repair.

JLPT N1 common questions

What is the JLPT N1 passing score?

You need at least 100 out of 180 overall and at least 19 out of 60 in each of Language Knowledge, Reading, and Listening. You must satisfy the total mark and all three sectional minimums.

How long is the JLPT N1 exam?

The current listed times total about 165 minutes: 110 minutes for the combined Language Knowledge and Reading section and 55 minutes for Listening. The N1 listening time has been listed as 55 minutes since the December 2022 test and can vary slightly with the recording.

What makes JLPT N1 reading different from N2?

N1 adds demanding long passages and expects more precise understanding of logical structure, abstract ideas, and nuanced viewpoints. It also includes integrated and thematic comprehension, so speed alone is not enough.

Do I need perfect Japanese to pass N1?

No. N1 certifies advanced comprehension within the abilities measured by the JLPT, not native-like mastery or speaking and writing ability. Preparation should target the tested vocabulary, grammar, reading, and listening item types while maintaining every sectional minimum.
