N5 is the most basic level of the JLPT. At this level, you can read and understand typical expressions and sentences written in hiragana, katakana, and basic kanji. You can listen to and understand conversations about topics regularly encountered in daily life when spoken slowly.

Best for: Learners who already know kana and most beginner grammar
- 1.Take one untimed practice test and list every missed vocabulary, grammar, reading, and listening pattern.
- 2.Study in short daily blocks: vocabulary and kanji, one grammar pattern, then a short reading or listening drill.
- 3.Complete at least two timed section runs in the final two weeks and review every wrong answer.

Best for: Learners with basic kana who need a complete N5 review
- 1.Use month one for core vocabulary, kanji, particles, and essential verb and adjective forms.
- 2.Use month two for sentence building, short reading, and slow daily listening with transcripts.
- 3.Use month three for mixed practice, timed sections, mistake review, and pass-forecast checks.

- 1.Build reliable kana reading first, then add small daily sets of vocabulary and kanji.

JLPT N5 common questions
What is the JLPT N5 passing score?
You need at least 80 out of 180 overall, at least 38 out of 120 in Language Knowledge and Reading, and at least 19 out of 60 in Listening. You must meet both sectional minimums as well as the total pass mark.
How long is the JLPT N5 exam?
The current listed times total about 90 minutes: 20 minutes for Vocabulary, 40 minutes for Grammar and Reading, and 30 minutes for Listening. The official JLPT site notes that allotted time can change and listening time can vary slightly with the recording.
How many vocabulary words and kanji are required for N5?
The JLPT does not publish an official vocabulary, kanji, or grammar list. Prep books often use approximate targets, but you should judge readiness with the official question types and representative practice rather than treating a word count as a guarantee.
Does a practice-test percentage equal an official JLPT score?
No. The official JLPT uses scaled scores, so a raw practice percentage cannot be converted directly into an official score. Use practice results to find weak areas and check that no scoring section is consistently below its minimum.
