Exam format and practice method

How JLPT N2 listening works

N2 listening uses conversations, talks, and news-style passages at natural speed. You must follow a speaker’s real reason or opinion through concessions and indirect phrasing, and compare several options in longer integrated passages.

50 minOfficially listed listening time
5Question types covered here
3 testsOriginal practice sets

Always test at normal speed. In review, replay the line where the speaker changes direction (けど, ただ, 実は) and check the transcript only after a second listen. Listening time can vary slightly with the recording. Check the official JLPT test-section page ↗ for current timing.

Know the target before you listen

JLPT N2 listening question types

問題1

Task-based Comprehension

課題理解

What it tests
Following a situation and identifying what someone should do next.
Listen for
The goal, completed actions, sequence words, and the final decision.
Best approach
Read the choices first. Cross out actions that already happened, then confirm the next action when the question is repeated.

The question is heard before and after the conversation. These practice tests use four printed text or picture choices.

問題2

Point Comprehension

ポイント理解

What it tests
Finding one requested fact, reason, condition, time, place, or choice.
Listen for
The exact detail requested in the opening question, plus corrections such as ‘not Tuesday, Wednesday.’
Best approach
Turn the opening question into a target before the dialogue starts. Ignore interesting details that do not answer that target.

The question is heard before and after the conversation. These practice tests use four printed text or picture choices.

問題3

General Outline Comprehension

概要理解

What it tests
Understanding the speaker’s overall point, opinion, purpose, or conclusion.
Listen for
Repeated ideas, contrast words, the speaker’s attitude, and the final sentence.
Best approach
Do not chase every unknown word. Summarize the message in one short phrase before listening to the choices.

The passage comes first. The question and four choices are audio-only in these practice tests.

問題4

Quick Response

即時応答

What it tests
Responding naturally and immediately to a short utterance.
Listen for
Sentence ending, tense, polarity, social cue, and whether the speaker is asking, inviting, apologizing, or confirming.
Best approach
Predict the type of response before the choices. Eliminate replies that are grammatically possible but socially unnatural.

A short utterance and three responses are audio-only in these practice tests.

問題5

Integrated Comprehension

統合理解

What it tests
Comparing several options from a longer talk and deciding which one a speaker picks.
Listen for
How each option differs, each speaker’s conditions, and the moment someone rules an option out.
Best approach
Note one short feature for each option as it is described. Then match each speaker’s condition to the notes before the question plays.

A longer explanation and discussion come first. The question is heard at the end, with four printed choices in these practice tests.

Four-pass review

How to use transcripts and replay

  1. 1. Test: Listen once at normal speed with subtitles hidden and choose an answer.
  2. 2. Isolate: Replay only the sentence or transition that changed the answer.
  3. 3. Connect: Read the Japanese transcript and English translation while matching sounds to words.
  4. 4. Retest: Hide the transcript and replay the complete item once at normal speed.

Scoring correctly

Use raw scores for diagnosis, not prediction

The official JLPT listening section is reported on a 0–60 scaled score. A raw percentage from these practice questions cannot be converted directly into that score. Compare attempts by question type and make sure one weak type is not consistently pulling down the whole section.

JLPT N2 listening questions

What question types are in JLPT N2 listening?

N2 listening practice here covers task-based comprehension, point comprehension, general outline comprehension, quick response, and integrated comprehension. Each type requires a different target, from identifying a next action to choosing a natural immediate response.

Can I try JLPT N2 listening for free?

Yes. Each listed N2 practice test has one free audio question with its complete sample transcript. Full tests, translations, replay tools, and score tracking are available with Keiko Pro.

Are these official JLPT listening questions?

No. They are original JLPT-style practice questions created by JLPTPracticeTest.com. They are clearly separated from the official sample questions linked on this page and do not reproduce licensed historical questions.

How should I use transcripts for listening practice?

Listen once without the transcript, answer, and replay only the part you missed. Then read the Japanese transcript, check the English translation, and listen again while matching sounds to the script. Finish with one final transcript-free replay.

Does my N2 listening practice percentage equal an official score?

No. The JLPT reports scaled scores, so a raw practice percentage cannot be converted directly into the official 0–60 listening score. Use practice scores to compare attempts and identify weak question types.
