Best free JLPT practice tests online (2026)

Short answer: there is no single best site; it depends on what you need next. Use the official samples to learn the format. For free practice in volume, use JapaneseTest4You for short drills by skill or this site for written-section papers. If you are still learning grammar, Bunpro is the better pick. If you study on your phone and will pay for a big test bank with explanations, Migii is. We run one of the sites on this list (JLPT Practice Test), so we say where the others are better and where we are weaker.

Which one to pick

Best for the real format

Official JLPT samples (jlpt.jp)

Pick it if: Anyone who wants to see the real item types from the people who write the test: one sample per item type, the 2009 sample papers, and the Official Practice Workbooks, which the site says have "almost the same number of questions as an actual test", with audio, answers and listening scripts.

Skip it if: Learners who want to practise online with instant scoring, explanations, or a large number of different papers: the official material is a few sets of PDFs and audio, answers only.

Best for quick drills and free listening

JapaneseTest4You

Pick it if: Learners who want hundreds of short, free drills by skill (grammar, kanji, vocabulary, reading and listening) at every level, each with an answer key and a list of the new words, and no sign-up. In its own words: "hundreds of practice tests, thousands of infographics and flashcards".

Skip it if: Learners who want whole papers laid out and timed like the real exam, an explanation of why each answer is right, or saved scores.

Best for learning grammar with SRS

Bunpro

Pick it if: Learners who want to learn and keep JLPT grammar (and vocabulary) day by day with spaced-repetition reviews, native audio on example sentences, graded reading, and 25 JLPT practice tests with listening.

Skip it if: Learners who only want free practice papers: SRS reviews and decks are Premium after a 30-day trial, and we couldn't confirm whether the 25 practice tests are on the free plan.

Best phone app with a big test bank

Migii JLPT

Pick it if: Learners who study on their phone and want a big bank of real-format tests ("more than 200+ JLPT practice tests") with explanations, listening transcripts and translations, and timed mock exams.

Skip it if: Learners who want everything free: the free plan has 10 real-format tests and ads; the rest is Premium.

Best cheap timed mocks

GyanMirai

Pick it if: Learners who want timed mock tests "that mirror the actual JLPT structure, difficulty, and scoring", with a listening section, plus hundreds of short kanji, grammar and vocabulary tests and free tools.

Skip it if: Learners who want explanations for free: per-question explanations and all but one mock per level are on Pro.

Visit GyanMirai ↗

Best for free written explanations

OpenExamPrep

Pick it if: Learners who want free JLPT questions with a written explanation on each one and an AI tutor, with "no registration" and "no credit card". JLPT is one section of a general exam-prep site.

Skip it if: Learners who want listening practice or full timed papers: we found neither in its JLPT section.

Visit OpenExamPrep ↗

Topic drills on a small yen plan

Master JLPT

Pick it if: Learners at N5 to N2 who want "structured kanji, grammar, and reading practice" grouped by topic, and full-length timed exams on a low monthly yen plan.

Skip it if: Learners who want free practice beyond N5 or N1 practice: the free plan is 3 questions a day at N5.

Visit Master JLPT ↗

Pick JLPT Practice Test if

Learners who want many practice papers for the written sections (vocabulary, grammar and reading) in the exam's order (105 sets, 7,406 questions across N5 to N1), free and without an account, plus an AI tutor (Keiko) to explain the questions they miss.

  • More free written-section practice papers than the other sites we compared, with no account needed
  • Keiko, an AI tutor that explains a missed question in English or Japanese

When the AI tutor matters: if you often get a question wrong and can't see why, Keiko explains it and answers follow-up questions (10 free messages a day with a free account). OpenExamPrep also has an AI tutor (10 free interactions a day). Keiko is an AI and can be wrong, so check it against the answer key. If you just want an answer key, you don't need either.

Where we're weaker

  • vs Official JLPT samples (jlpt.jp): We are independent, so no set of ours carries the organizers' authority on format or difficulty
  • vs Official JLPT samples (jlpt.jp): Their listening audio is free at every level; ours needs Keiko Pro for full sets and has no N1
  • vs Official JLPT samples (jlpt.jp): If you can only do one or two full papers before the exam, theirs are the ones to do
  • vs JapaneseTest4You: Our full listening sets need Keiko Pro, and we have no N1 listening; theirs are free at every level
  • vs JapaneseTest4You: We have no vocabulary list after each set, and our flashcards (Anki decks) come with the paid packs
  • vs JapaneseTest4You: Our sets are whole written sections; if you want a 5-minute drill on one skill, theirs are quicker
  • vs Bunpro: We have no grammar course or built-in SRS; Bunpro is the better pick if you are still learning N3 or N2 grammar
  • vs Migii JLPT: If you want written explanations on every question and you're fine paying a yearly plan, Migii Premium has more of them than our paid mocks
  • vs GyanMirai: Their free mock includes listening; our free listening is a sample only
  • vs OpenExamPrep: Our free practice sets show the answer but no written explanation; theirs explain each question
  • vs Master JLPT: Topic-grouped drills: our sets are whole papers in exam order

And in general:

  • Free practice sets show the right answer but no written explanation
  • No N1 listening, and the full listening sets need Keiko Pro
  • No grammar course or built-in spaced repetition
  • Our timed mocks have no listening section
  • Our N5 and N4 practice sets 3 to 10 are easier than the real exam
  • Independent: not made by the people who write the exam
